Nokia: 5G improves energy efficiency, study shows

(CercleFinance.com) - 5G networks are up to 90% more energy efficient than legacy 4G networks, a new study by Nokia and Telefonica has showed.

"The results highlighted that 5G RAN technology is significantly more efficient than legacy technologies when it comes to energy consumption per data traffic capacity with several hardware and software features that help to save energy," Nokia said on Wednesday.

The research, which was conducted over three months, focused on the power consumption of its radio access network (RAN) equipment in Telefonica's network.

5G offers more data bits per kilowatt of energy than previous wireless technologies, but networks require further action to minimise CO2 emissions, such as small cell deployments, Nokia said.
