Volkswagen: increases battery production capacity

(CercleFinance.com) - Volkswagen today announced that its factory in Braunschweig (Germany) is "considerably" expanding its production of batteries for the latest generation of electric vehicles.

The second expansion of this site, which is currently underway, should enable the plant to reach a maximum production capacity of 500,000 batteries per year, VW said.

These batteries will be used for the fully electric Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4, as well as the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV. In addition, up to 100,000 battery systems will also be produced for the electric SEAT Mii, ŠKODA Citigoe iV and hybrid vehicles such as the Golf GTE.

In all, the plant will therefore be able to produce up to 600,000 systems each year, giving it a key strategic role for the group.

And Volkswagen is unlikely to stop there: the factory will further increase its hybrid battery production capacity from 50,000 per year today to 300,000 by 2023, the carmaker announced.
