AB Inbev: doubts on CUB takeover by Asahi

(CercleFinance.com) - Initially, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC), the national competition regulator, has expressed concerns about the proposed acquisition of brewer Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), a subsidiary of AB InBev, by the Japanese Group Asahi.


The regulatory body believes that Asahi's acquisition of CUB, which is the two largest cider suppliers in Australia (with the Somersby, Strongbow, Mercury and Bulmers brands), risks reducing competition in a market that is already very concentrated, which would therefore result in raising prices.

Although Asahi argues that cider and beer are part of the same market, the ACCC does not share this opinion.
